Bowled Eagle

I thought I was going to carve a simple bowl. I had this piece of marble lying around all summer and I put it on the table to start carving, washed it down and found this area of colour. I flipped it onto its back and then I noticed the profile, seen in this first image.

Obviously it was not going to be an ordinary bowl. The concentration of dark colours in an otherwise white/cream coloured stone gave me a focal point to start imagining a birds head in the stones’s shape.

As with most of my carvings the lines you start to establish lead you to the next and the next. Each shape of line feeding the next one and literally dictating what the next curve will look like.
